Pawtucket – Richard Simon Chretien, 96, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of Claire M. (Lozo) Chretien for sixty-three years. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Elzear and Eva (Martin) Chretien. He is predeceased by his siblings Yvette Coderre, Gilberte Chretien, Isabelle Chretien, and Raymond Chretien.
Richard graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls in 1948 and from Providence College in 1953. Upon graduation he served in the United States Army in Germany for two years as a medic. After he was discharged from the army he worked for ten years as a middle school teacher. Subsequent to that he worked for the City of Pawtucket Water Department until his retirement in 2000. He was a parishioner of St. Theresa’s in Pawtucket and the former St. Mary’s Parish in Pawtucket. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, writing poetry, doing crosswords, playing chess, and writing to the Opinions Page of the Providence Journal. He was an avid Mt. St. Charles Hockey fan and always enjoyed having a good beer. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Alongside his wife, he leaves behind his beloved children; Marc Chretien (Nicole) of North Kingstown and Suzanne Richard (Barry) of North Dartmouth, MA, grandchildren; Alexandra Chretien, Samuel Chretien, Steven Richard (Erica), and Zachary Richard.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Bethany House for the wonderful care they provided to Richard during the last two months of his life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 11AM at St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church, 358 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. Interment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket.
VISITATION will be held prior to the Mass from 9AM-10AM at the WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket
