Joseph Leo Fontaine

Sandwich – Joseph “Joe” L. Fontaine, 94, formerly of Rehoboth, MA and Central Falls, RI passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late M. Martha (Bousquet) Fontaine. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Romeo J. and Beatrice (Provencher) Fontaine. Joe attended Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls, RI and joined the US Navy at age 17 to serve his nation and help supplement his parent’s wartime income.  A World War II veteran, Joe was a gunner’s mate assigned to protect merchant ships from enemy aircraft attack.  He attended basic training at Newport Naval Base, toured with fuel tanker convoys travelling with the Atlantic Fleet and enjoyed Brooklyn, NY as his homeport.  When there, skating at Rockefeller Plaza was amongst his favorite passions.  After the war ended in 1945, he attended electrical trade school and became a master electrician—spending most of his career at Narragansett Wire Company in Pawtucket, RI...
