Pawtucket - Jose Manuel Aguiar, 75, was granted eternal peace on March 27, 2020, following a lifelong illness of ALS.
His final days were spent surrounded by his loving family.
Although Joe’s illness made him appear frail, he possessed great strength, determination and perseverance and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges.
With his courage he led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories.
Jose was born on September 30, 1944 and raised in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, before moving to the U.S. with his family and residing in Pawtucket, RI over 40 years ago.
Jose was employed as Mechanic for many years preceding his illness at the Cedar Street Sunoco gas station in Pawtucket, RI.
In his spare time, he enjoyed the Portuguese Social Club in Pawtucket, horse betting at Twin River, and spending time with his family and friends over great Portuguese food and drinks.
Joe also loved his animals including his dogs, his cockatoo and canary birds.
He was an avid bird enthusiast.
Jose was also veteran of the Portuguese Armed Forces, B.A. #3, TANC 03.
Joe leaves behind many wonderful caregivers and dear family members that provided love and support that enhanced his quality of life.
There is a special place in our hearts for his loving daughter Nelia, whose dedication, love and support provided Joe the strength to survive through some of his toughest medical challenges.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Maria C.
Aguiar; his loving daughter and devoted caregiver, Nelia Aguiar Bears; his grandson, Adrian Aguiar-Ray; his great-grandson, Ryan Aguiar-Ray and his dog, Lana.
Jose is the son of the late Angelina Farias Aguiar Costa and Joao Levino Costa.
He is the brother of Lurdes, Graca, Conceicao, Ana Paula Aguiar Costa and Victor, all of Sao Miguel, Portugal.
Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket, will be private.
