EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life extraordinarily well lived, we announce that John “Jack” R. Nixon passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of family. Jack was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to parents, Annis (Bayley) Nixon and Robert B. Nixon, Jr. He was also the beloved nephew of the late Mary Bayley.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sharon (McDonald) Nixon, whose partnership was the foundation of a life centered on devotion, family, and shared purpose. He was a proud and loving father to Jennifer, John, and Meredith, and a cherished brother to Robert Bruce Nixon III and sister-in-law Mary Nixon. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Robert Macnamara and Chris Donato.
Known affectionately as “Pop,” Jack took immense pride in his six grandchildren — Bayley and Robert Macnamara; John-Thomas, Francesca, Thaddeus, and Nathaniel Donato — each of whom brought him immeasurable joy and whom he loved beyond measure.
For 55 years, Jack and Sharon made their home in Rumford, where they built not just a household, but a gathering place filled with warmth, laughter, guidance, and unwavering support for children, grandchildren, extended family, and countless friends.
Jack’s lifelong commitment to excellence began with his graduation from Moses Brown School in 1960, an experience he often described as transformational. His gratitude for the education and values he received there inspired a lasting family legacy, with his brother Bruce, son John, and grandsons JT, Tad, and Nate all following in his footsteps.
He continued his academic journey at Brown University, graduating cum laude and distinguishing himself as a top scholar in the Brown Naval ROTC Class of 1964. Jack later earned his MBA in Finance from the University of Rhode Island, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA — a reflection of the discipline and determination that defined his life. He completed his formal education at the prestigious Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1974, finishing in the top ten percent of his class.
Before pursuing his MBA, Jack proudly served two years of active duty in the United States Navy aboard the USS Independence. His dedication to service continued for the next 25 years in the Naval Reserve, where he commanded five separate units, spent active time in Vietnam and ultimately retired with the distinguished rank of Captain. His leadership was marked by integrity, steadiness, and an unwavering sense of responsibility to those under his command.
Jack spent his entire professional career with Fleet Bank, where he earned widespread respect as both a leader and mentor. Rising through the organization, he retired as Executive Vice President of Branch Banking for Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. While responsible for more than 900 employees, Jack was known less for his title and more for the personal investment he made in others. Many credit their success to his guidance, encouragement, and belief in their potential.
Yet perhaps Jack’s greatest impact was felt through his tireless commitment to the community he loved. He served on the boards of more than a dozen charitable and nonprofit organizations, always giving generously of his time, wisdom, and leadership. Among the causes closest to his heart were the Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club, the John P. Burke Memorial Fund, Meeting Street School, and a long-standing member on the board of the United Way of Rhode Island. Jack believed deeply in lifting others and strengthening the community for future generations.
Despite his many accomplishments, Jack remained a man of remarkable humility. He found joy in life’s simplest and most meaningful moments — especially time spent with family. A longtime member of Wannamoisett Country Club for 50 years, Jack loved the game of golf, but treasured most the friendships and camaraderie shared with his weekly foursome, affectionately known as “the Friday guys” or his weekly Patriots watch party group.
Family, however, was always his true north. Nothing made him happier than having everyone together. He was a steady source of wisdom, a welcoming presence to all who crossed his threshold, and a trusted advisor whose thoughtful counsel shaped many lives.
Jack held a special fondness for his birthday celebrations — complete with a slice of cake and “one” scoop of vanilla ice cream — moments that perfectly reflected his appreciation for tradition, joy, and togetherness.
A devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, respected leader, and selfless community member, Jack lived a life defined by generosity, integrity, and quiet strength. His legacy endures in the family he nurtured, the people he mentored, and the countless lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored. Though he is no longer with us, the example he set — of kindness, humility, service, and unwavering love — will continue to guide all who knew him.
Jack’s life was one that truly made a difference.
