Rumford - Gregory William Caffrey, 74, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. He was the loving husband of Chrystine (Nahas) Caffrey for over fifty years. Born and raised in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Francis P. and Helen L. (Gregory) Caffrey.
Greg was a 1969 graduate of St. Raphael's Academy and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island. He taught Mathematics at both Goff Middle School and Shea High School in Pawtucket, where he made a lasting impression on countless students with his knowledge and quiet kindness. In his youth, he played baseball in Pawtucket's Darlington League-a passion that evolved into a lifelong love of sports. A devoted New England sports fan, he could be found cheering for his teams with characteristic enthusiasm, and using his dry sense of humor to keep those around him entertained through both victories and defeats.
Greg’s genuine love of sports extended to watching his grandchildren play soccer, moments that brought him immense joy and pride. Known by friends and acquaintances as someone who would do anything for anyone, Greg embodied a rare combination of humility and generosity. He carried zero ego, always thinking of others before himself, with a kindness and sincerity that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. A member of Wannamoisett Country Club for 33 years, he had a deep love for golf, a passion he shared closely with his daughters. From teaching them the game at a very young age to proudly supporting them throughout their competitive years, he was always their number one fan on and off the course. He treasured time spent golfing with close friends, participating in various golf leagues where his wit, easygoing nature, and famously slow pace became part of his signature charm. He also loved live music, no matter the genre—he simply enjoyed the experience of a good show, especially when he could understand the words.
He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, papa, and educator-but perhaps most importantly, as a man of genuine character whose quiet strength and genuine goodness were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Alongside his wife, he leaves behind his beloved children; Elizabeth Caffrey of Denver, CO and Alexandra Boutros (Elias) of South Kingstown; grandchildren, Hudson, Henley, and Harper; brother, Stephen Caffrey (Sheila), sister-in-law, Kathleen Caffrey, mother-in-law, Dorothy Nahas, brother-in-law Billy Nahas (Julie) and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, the late Garret Caffrey, and nephews, Michael and Matthew Caffrey.
Funeral Arrangements are private and entrusted to the WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. A Memorial will be held in late June to honor and celebrate Greg's life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: John P. Burke Memorial Fund, One Button Hole Drive, Providence, RI 02909
