Glenn W. Birtwell

Pawtucket - Glenn W. Birtwell, 63, of Pawtucket, died peacefully Saturday, January 30, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Glenn was the beloved son of Jean (Pailthorpe) Birtwell and the late William L. Birtwell. Glenn was a devoted father, son, brother, and wonderful friend. Glenn touched the lives of many. He lived all of his years with unconditional love, overwhelming generosity, and incredible bravery. He was a man defined by his intense passion for the things important to his family and his community. An avid fisherman, Glenn relished his time tying flies and wetting a line. He served as the President of the United Fly Tyers Association of Rhode Island. Glenn volunteered numerous hours to help ensure fishing in Rhode Island would continue to prosper; and worked on coordinating a project to restore the Friendship Gardens area of Slater Park. He loved golf and baseball, and could often be found on the links or roaming the ballpark. Glenn’s efforts in the community had an impact on many of the area’s young people. He was tirelessly active in youth organizations, including serving as President of the Darlington National Little League and creating the Pawtucket Intra-City Senior Baseball League, which provided additional playing opportunities for hundreds of kids.Glenn’s larger-than-life heart had a profound impact on all who knew him. He is known for always showing up when needed and never expecting as much as a thanks in return. Glenn never put himself first, he took great pleasure in helping others, and was truly a great friend to so many people. Glenn passed away after a courageous bout with pancreatic cancer, but the strength and indomitable spirit he showed in his last years have been an inspiration to all with whom he was close.In addition to his mother, Glenn was loved by his sons Nathan Birtwell of Nashville, TN, and Nicholas Birtwell and wife Leah of Johnston; siblings Barbara Girard and husband Al of Barrington, Carol Hodnett of Stuart, FL, Bruce Birtwell and his late wife Patricia of Seekonk, Susan Chace and husband Bill of Rumford; as well as many extended family members and wonderful friends.His ashes will be spread along the banks of some of his favorite angling spots, and as his best fishing buddy always reminded him during the toughest times, "no matter what, you are always on the Wood River."
