Carson City, Nevada - Fredrick James Hartzell passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024 at the age of 76.

Fred was born in Seattle, Washington to parents James and Mary Hartzell (Pierce).

He grew up in America’s National Parks where his father served as a National Park Ranger including Washington’s Olympic National Park, Wyoming’s Devils Tower National Monument and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park in California.

While living in Sequoia National Park, Fred hiked extensively.

His name is on many a trail and peak register.

He also worked at Wolverton Ski Area keeping the rope tows operating and became an expert skier.

Fred graduated from Woodlake Union High School and attended College of the Sequoias.

Fred honorably served his country enlisting in the US Navy in 1968 serving in the United States Naval Construction Battalion, Navy Seabees.

Fred served tours in Vietnam, the Panama Canal Zone and Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean receiving both the National Defense Service and Vietnam Service Medals.

During his military service, he met his wife of 31 years Earline Hartzell (Hallal) of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Fred and Earline settled in Pawtucket and had a daughter, Heidi Hartzell now of Bristol, RI.

During his time in Pawtucket, Fred was known as a talented mechanic and a father who was a dedicated volunteer coach to many of his daughter’s Pawtucket Slaterettes baseball teams and CYO basketball teams.

Later in life, Fred moved back to what he considered his home state of California living near his brother Nick and sister-in-law Ali in beautiful Markleeville and worked outdoors for Alpine County.

He also spent later years living and making new friends in Gardnerville, Nevada.

In addition to his daughter Heidi, Fred is survived by two brothers, Robert Hartzell and wife Sue of Cambria, CA, Nick Hartzell and wife Ali of Markleeville, CA and sister Margaret Hartzell of Omak, Washington as well as several nieces and nephews on the east and west coasts and his former spouse Earline.

Fred will be remembered for his love of nature and animals, especially dogs.

Memorial donations can be made to the Sequoia Parks Conservancy in California or the Potter League for Animals in Rhode Island.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Services with Military Honors on Monday, September 16th at 10:00 a.m. directly at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 S.
