East Providence - Ellis J. Newton, 88, formerly of Rumford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July13, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Arline (Trahan) Newton. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Jay C. and Pearl (Pennington) Newton. Ellis resided in Rumford over forty years and was a parishioner at Saint Margaret Church.He is a World War II veteran (1943-1946) enlisted in the United States Marine Corps 6th Marine Division and served in the South Pacific Theater as a rifle marksman, mortar crewman and guard. He participated in the ceremony at the surrender of the Japanese Military Forces in the area of Tsingtao, China and was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal. Ellis is a member of the Marine Corps League, Kent County Detachment.He was a driver salesman for Autocrat Coffee, Lincoln for over 25 years until retiring.
