Pawtucket – Edna R. (Letourneau) Markey, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous fight with cancer.
She was the beloved wife of the late George N.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the youngest daughter of the late Armand G. and Doria (LaPorte) Letourneau.
Edna graduated in 1956 from Tolman High School, Pawtucket, and was a lifelong resident of the city.
She worked at the former L.G.
Balfour Company, Attleboro, MA, and the former Dilon Company, Inc., North Attleboro, MA for many years.
Edna enjoyed simple pleasures.
Her greatest joy was being with her family, who affectionately called her Mémère.
She enjoyed taking walks around the neighborhood and local parks, and always looked forward to shopping excursions with her daughters and granddaughters.
Attending regional plays, fairs, and festivals with the family was always enjoyable for Edna.
Her modest nature belied the fact that Edna had an enormous and positive influence on her family through her giving nature, maternal strength, and quiet love.
Edna always looked forward to talking with her son using video calls, and the twice-daily (or more!) chats with sister Irene, especially after they both embraced video streaming technology.
Of particular importance in her later life was the time she spent with her loving companion “Mickey.” They enjoyed life together– from simple quiet time in one another’s company, to eating at favorite restaurants, to attending the Annual Portuguese Festival.
Having a hand to hold and a love to share with Mickey was an unexpected and precious gift for Edna in her senior years.
Edna is survived by three beloved children, Linda A.
Markey of Pawtucket, Thomas G.
Markey and his wife, Debra, of Arizona, and Debra M.
Piper of West Warwick; five grandchildren, Zachary, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Abbie, and Mollie; a sister, Irene McCarthy of Connecticut, and Edna’s companion, Harold McShane of Pawtucket. “Aunt Nana” will also be missed by several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Eugene and Henry Letourneau.
The family will always be thankful for the compassionate care provided to Edna by Dr.
Christopher Azzoli and his oncology team, as well as the warmth and attentive nature of her infusion team in the Ambulatory Patient Care Center at Rhode Island Hospital.
The support and guidance of HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice, during Edna’s last weeks, was an invaluable comfort and support to the family, too, as Edna transitioned to her final stage of life.
Edna’s funeral will be held on Saturday, September 7th, beginning with visitation at 1:00 p.m., and concluding with Services at 3:00 p.m. in WILLIAM W.
TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket.
Internment with her late husband in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA, will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to American Cancer Society, P.O.
Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 would be appreciated.
