East Providence – Charles E. Plante, 95, of Rumford, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 4, 2021. He was the beloved husband of late Phyllis E. (Brown) Plante. Born in Cranston on July 5, 1926, he was one of nine children of the late Amos and Clarinna (Dionne) Plante. Charlie was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army in Europe. As an infantry soldier, he was assigned to a mortar squad where he carried and placed the heavy steel base plate that supported the mortar when it was fired. After the Axis Alliance surrendered, Charlie traveled throughout Germany and witnessed the aftermath of the war. Charlie enjoyed reading and sharing stories of his experiences during the Second World War so that future generations would understand the significance of that time and sacrifices of so many during those trying years of our nation’s history.
