Anastasios Kounavis

d. November 19, 2024

Providence – Anastasios “Tommy” Kounavis, 75, passed away following health complications on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Born in Krini, Greece, he was the son of the late Aristomenis and Aggeliki (Stathopoulos) Kounavis.

Anastasios lived most of his life in Pawtucket and Providence, Rhode Island.

Affectionately known as “Tommy” to many friends and family, he was a proud Greek-American who deeply embraced his heritage.

He loved spending time in his hometown of Krini, Greece, where he found joy in tending to his beloved olive trees.

A hardworking restaurateur, Anastasios owned Jiffy Chef in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, and later in life, Georgia’s Family Restaurant in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

He also found joy in the simple pleasures of life, gathering daily with friends for coffee at the local Market Basket and at Sam’s New York System Restaurant.

He is survived by his daughter, Athena (Rich) Kertzman; his son, Ari (Crissa) Kounavis; and four beloved grandchildren: Lucy and Jack Kertzman, and Hopson and Greta Kounavis.

One of seven children, he leaves behind his brother, Nick Kounavis of Utah and Nebraska, and his sister, Eleni Tsakonas of Providence, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings Antoni Kounavis, Kostandinos Kounavis, Kyriako Kounavis, and Maria Panovrakos.

His niece Angela (“Tsoupara”) Kounavis, goddaughter Anastasia Vellopoulos; her parents Nick and Argiroula Vellopoulou; and best friend George Karali held special places in his heart.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, November 23rd, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 97 Walcott Street, Pawtucket.

A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 11 a.m., with interment at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church would be deeply appreciated.
