Alan E. Matook

June 29, 1944 — February 20, 2022

Matook, 77, formerly of Montclair, New Jersey and presently of Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 20, 2022 after a brief illness.

He is predeceased by his parents, George and Alma (Daghir) Matook, and two brothers, George T.

Matook and Thomas Matook.

He leaves behind his sister, Florence (Matook) Spenard and her husband, Phillip of Attleboro, MA, his sister-in-law, Sandra Matook of Johnston, RI, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews as well.

Alan graduated from Tolman High School, Pawtucket, in 1962; the following year he attended PC where he earned a BA (Magna Cum Laude) in Biology.

Matook then enrolled into the University of Rhode Island, where he received a Master of Science degree (Summa Cum Laude) and was presented with the Phi Sigma Award and several other accolades, which he humbly accepted.

After graduating from URI, Alan continued on his dedicated journey to become a doctor of infectious diseases; he attended the University of Miami School of Medicine and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where he joyfully achieved his dream; he fulfilled his residency requirements at St.

Michael’s Medical Center in New Jersey where he was the Chief Medical Resident, Clinical Fellow and the Senior Research Fellow.

He joined Mountainside Hospital in 1978, where he eventually achieved the title of Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases; he was also an innovator and staunch supporter of the Residency Program.

Alan was an icon in his field and was respected and loved by all that he guided and mentored, he, himself, being the doctor that each strived to emulate.

Residents’ Learning Center was dedicated in his honor and will serve as a remembrance of this brilliant and selfless man forever.

Matook dedicate his life to medicine, but he lovingly, passionately and consistently served God and his church.

He not only practiced his faith- he was an ambassador of it; he took hold of any opportunity he could to educate and to inform people of the teachings and of the traditions of Orthodoxy.

As a devout member of the Antiochian Christian Orthodox faith, Alan served on the Archdiocese Board of Trustees for over twenty years in many capacities and served his home parish in Little Falls, New Jersey.

One of Alan’s proudest experiences occurred when he received the highest honor that a layman could achieve, the Antonian Gold Medal of Merit.

There will be a void in the lives of the countless number of people who knew him as Uncle Alan, as a brother, brother-in-law, cousin, friend and as Dr.

He was a special man, whose imprint on our lives will forever remain forever in our hearts.

The visiting hours are from 9 AM to 11 AM with the funeral service directly following on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at St.

Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, 249 High Street, Pawtucket, RI.

Interment will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI.
