Ruth A. Errington David

Ruth A. Errington David, true to her belief eternal, left us on June 24th to begin again. She was the daughter of Catherine (Harden) and George H. Errington. Most of all, Ruth’s reason for living was her beloved family. Mother of two daughters, Nancy-Lee Devane (her singing partner) and Catherine R. Fox (her Buddy) and husband Elliott M. Fox, Jr., with whom she lived lovingly and completely cared for in every way up to her last day. Ruth believed in the power of love and gave it each day to her family. In addition to her daughters and son-in-law, she leaves three treasured grandchildren: Ruth D. Fox, William E.E. Devane and wife Jessica, Elliott M. Fox III and wife Elizabeth. She leaves seven dearly adored great-grandchildren: Taylor C. Fox with whom she also resided, Madison R. Fox, Sarah R. Fox, Mason E. Fox, Arielle E. Fox, Avery E. Devane and Bennett E. Devane. She also leaves beloved nieces and nephews and was preceded by death by her sister Dorothy M. Errington and her dearly loved brother, 1st Lieutenant, Walter H. Errington and wife Muriel. An actress, author, and writer of music throughout her life, she is listed in Great American Poets. As a gospel singer, she performed many times in USO appearances during wartime and often at Seekonk Congregational Church, where she was a member. A devoted nurse, she loved her work at The Miriam and Fuller Memorial Hospitals, where she served as Med Nurse for seventeen years until her retirement. Dear to her heart were her High-Low-Jack buddies who met each month and brought joy to her life. She would bid “4” to the gasps of her players, and then, win! Her friends were precious to her and their calls brightened her days. Also, an avid reader, she would devour a book a day! Mum was a beautiful singer who gave one “chills” holding a note while playing a piano. She was the writer of many songs: “Sweet William”, “Golden Boy”, “The Last Time”, “Saturday Morning Kiss”, “Momma”, and “In Sleep”. As a poet, here is a sample from one of her poems called “Sweet Sleeper”: “I watched you once again last night when darkness made the room a place, where moonbeams wove a ribbon bright through the curtains on to your face.” She also published short stories about her childhood while living during the time of America’s Great Depression. She was inspiring. Though at 16, she had to quit high school to help support her family, she went on to complete her GED and attend Emerson College, where she received the highest grade of an A+ on many of her writing assignments. One professor commented on her paper, “I wish I had a higher grade to give you for your work!” So, she was a smarty-pants as well as being so musically talented. Not only a singer and writer, she was a graceful dancer, too. She taught ballroom dancing for Arthur Murray Studios when she was younger and opened our home as a dance studio for local preteens to learn the waltz, foxtrot and such. She was intuitive. She read fortunes with cards for friends and family, a talent passed down from her Irish grandmother. We would plead with her often, “Please Mummy, read us our fortune!” What fun! Mamma Mia was a stage actress. She starred in a few local television commercials. Our dear Mother, was funny and witty causing many smiles and guffaws as she passed through this world. She also complimented everyone on something…” You have the prettiest hair.”, “That nail polish is so becoming to you.”, “You are such a good driver.” As one of her old favorite hymns “Whispering Hope” states, “Hope with its gentle persuasion whispers encouraging words”. Momma loved her “Boys of Summer” (grandsons William and Elliott’s friends) and they loved her in return, calling her “Nana”, as if she was their own. She delighted in watching “The Girls” do “dress-up” as they performed their made-up holiday kitchen shows. She loved Red Sox baseball and of course, the Patriots! She was in great pain for way too long, but still laughed loudly, even up to a few moments before her soul took flight. She loved her family, they meant EVERYTHING to her. She loved Burger Kings’ 10-piece chicken nuggets “dippies” with two honey-mustard sauces. She loved God. She would recommend we Rejoice, Give Thanks, and Sing! That is what we will strive to do Mum, Nana, Nanny. Though we all have called you by many names, “a rose is still a rose” and we will be loving you, “Forever and Always”! Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a Memorial Service on Sunday, July 21st, at 11:15 a.m. at Seekonk Congregational Church, 600 Fall River Avenue, Seekonk.
